Divine Healing

Healing

The Holy Scriptures speak in many places of the wonderful healing power of God. In prophetic reference to Christ, the Psalmist David said, "Who fortieth all thine iniquities; who health all thy diseases;" (Psalm 103:3). The prophet Isaiah also declared that we are healed by the stripes which Christ bore: "But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed" (Isaiah 53:5). This is confirmed in the New Testament in 1 Peter 2:24.

The early Church practiced divine healing. Peter, John, Paul, and many other ministers in the New Testament are recorded as preaching and practicing divine healing. James gave specific instructions to the sick, saying, "Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of the faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him" (James 5:14, 15).

Divine healing means the making well or curing of a disease or physical condition by the power of God without the aid of medicine or the ability of man. It is divine because God does it, and God is divine. Many have said that God helps the doctors to heal; but the Scriptures bear out the fact that God Himself can and does heal altogether by His own power. There are many cases today where the doctors have done all they can do, and then God intervenes and heals. Many times the doctors merely confirm the healing power of God by professionally proving that a person was sick, but now is well; and that they did not and could not help that person's condition.

Doctors are helpful in many cases, and there is nothing wrong with going to them. However, a Christian with sufficient faith can receive healing for his body from God alone, without having to resort to medical means.

God is our Redeemer, our Healer, and the Supplier of all our needs. The only way to receive His promises is to accept them by faith. Since faith is the underlying principle in our relationship with God, we need to seek to cultivate more faith and dependence on the promises of God in His Holy Word.
