Not Forgotten: Remembering our Older Members and Ministers

When I served as Assistant Editor of The Evening Light, I wrote an article in the November 2015 edition entitled, “Thankful for God’s Jewels,” which referenced the precious treasures found in the membership and ministry of The Church of God worldwide. This article focused on one individual, but the context extended to all who have faithfully served the Lord and the church, and to those who have positively impacted us.
It has been my feeling for some time that perhaps the older members and ministry may feel somewhat forgotten after their many years of faithful service. I would like to say that each one we have in The Church of God is still vital to our work. Many have gone on to their reward, but those left among us are a treasure trove of experience and their work for God is to be gleaned from and built atop of.
The article said in part, “‘And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels…’ (Mal. 3:17). ‘Render therefore to all their dues… honour to whom honour’ (Rom. 13:7).”
There are special treasures found in The Church of God all over the world! From precious member to anointed leader who has ruled well and should be given ‘double honour,’ God has many priceless jewels for which we offer thanks. These spiritual jewels have taken many forms such as a godly parent, grandparent, Church member or minister who had some positive spiritual influence in your life. It is fitting to reflect on those who have blessed or affected each of us along life’s journey. It would seem most appropriate to let them know our feelings, should the privilege exist to be able to still speak with them.
Let’s take time to show our gratitude for God’s ‘jewels.’
“…It would behoove us to let these ‘jewels’ of the Church know the impact they have made on our lives. Let’s take time… to express our thankfulness and gratefulness to those precious souls who have helped us or have been a blessing or encouragement. Let us give honor to the Lord who made these lives and examples possible by leaving with us the ultimate pattern to follow—His life—and for the price that was paid to make our redemption possible…”
Years ago, as General CPMA Coordinator, I boosted a special promotion throughout the Church to give special honor to our older ministers and members. Now in the role as Church Historian, I still feel compelled with the same burden and would like to petition our pastors’ assistance with recognizing our older ministers and members once again. Pastor boosters can also honor our older pastors in some special way.
The details of this effort and how you decide to implement it would be up to you (as it’s not so much about what is done nor the time of year, but the emphasis is made that they are remembered). For this effort, during the month of May, I would love to see these “jewels” of The Church of God honored in some way in each local church. They are appreciated and “not forgotten.”
